I have to say that this is one of the best movies I've seen all year. One of my pet peeves is when there is a sudden switch in characters - aka The Darren Syndrome. But I must say, Maggie Gyllenhal did a much better job as Rachel than Katie Holmes ever could. But alas, I was very glad she died.
My favorite part? The very end - "The hero we need, not the hero we deserve" that line just made the movie for me.
Plus the magic trick - I giggled. That was hilarious.
As for an Oscar - who knows really. There have been several outstanding performances through out the years that have not received even a nomination. Will they take into account that Ledger is dead? Most likely. To me Ledger has always been so-so. I didn't bother to watch Brokeback Mountain since it didn't bum my pre-screening requirements as provided by Gary for any movies that are on the DVR. I won't watch anything unless Gary watches it first and determines I can stay awake during it.
I don't think there's anyone out there who could have portrayed the Joker the way Ledger did. His performance gave me goose bumps. Instead of being the funny Joker like Nicholson, Ledger was scary.
And after watching that performance and knowing that Ledger is a "character" actor, it's no wonder that he was so depressed. He had to get into the mindframe of a psycho and I'm sure that's not conclusive to a happy, healthy life.
Edited - I typed Gary the first time, I swear I did.
